On May 31, the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia in Russia was hit by a storm with heavy rain, hail, and strong winds that lasted for several hours. The hurricane-force winds swept everything in their path, tearing down advertising banners, metal fences, and even roofs of houses. Hundreds of cars, 12 apartment buildings, and 123 private houses were damaged in the region. Tower cranes could not withstand the gusts of wind. According to local residents, it was the strongest hurricane in Karachay-Cherkessia in the last 20 years. A resident of the city of Cherkessk became a casualty of the disaster when a tree fell on his car. Another 17 people were injured, six of whom were hospitalized. The head of the republic announced that a regional state of emergency has been declared in the city of Cherkessk, as well as in the Abaza, Zelenchuk, Prikubansk, and Khabez districts.
