Jötunheimr (Old Norse for ‘World of the Giants’) is one of the Nine Worlds which are held in the branches and roots of the world tree Yggdrasill. Jötunheimr is also known as Útgarðr (Old Norse for ‘beyond the fence’) meaning that Útgarðr is chaotic and wild. In the Poetic Eddas Jötunheimr is described as a world with deep, dark forests with mountain peaks where winter never eases its grip.
