In the UK, up to 77 million fish are farmed and killed each year. The aquaculture industry is one of the most secretive industries, with very few people knowing how fish are farmed. Fish farms are basically floating factory farms, where fish often spend their brief lives confined in cramped, dirty and lice-ridden pens, waiting to be sucked up onto boats for slaughter or transport to land. Animal Equality's latest investigation inside the fish farming industry reveals a shocking truth about aquaculture: fish are often killed while fully conscious. Using drones, we documented what happens on salmon and trout slaughter boats in Scotland. Our cameras filmed: - Fish entering the stun-kill machine tail first, resulting in their tail being cut instead of their head causing them prolonged suffering - Smaller fish discarded and left to suffocate in empty buckets - Fish still flapping after exiting the stunning machine Like any other animal, fish are capable of feeling pain and joy and therefore they deserve to be protected and respected. Slaughterhouses are always merciless places, and fish are especially vulnerable as there are currently no species-specific laws in place for fish at the time of killing. We are urging the UK Government to put in place stronger protection for fish.
