“During the 1980’s, a catastrophic drought ravaged parts of Africa, destroying crops and eroding the landscape of the Sahel. AN AFRICAN RECOVERY focuses on new efforts being made by rural planners and ordinary citizens to minimize the risk of repeating the recent tragedy. Once a flourishing waterway, the Niger River is silted and shallow, bordered by a denuded landscape that no longer can support hunting or farming as overgrazing, forest destruction, and natural disasters have forced the people of the Niger to depend heavily on outside emergency aid. But now, community projects among various groups in Niger are being explored, examining how local development efforts can help create solutions tailored to local needs.“ (Description taken from original VHS cover) By Sandra Nichols Co-produced by The United Nations
