The entire state is sinking! People escape from flooded cars and houses in Tamil Nadu, India Natural disaster 4 December 2023. As of December 4th, Tropical Cyclone Mikaung is moving northwest in the western part of the Bay of Bengal. The storm's circulation center was approximately 111 km northeast of Chennai, India. Forecast models indicate that the system will continue to strengthen as it moves north along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is projected that after making landfall, the system will rapidly weaken into a depression as it moves north and then dissipate over the southern state of Chhattisgarh by early December 7th. The forecast for the storm's direction and intensity remains somewhat uncertain, with potential changes in the coming hours and days. The Meteorological Department of India has issued red alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Orange alerts for torrential rain and strong winds are in effect in Odisha and Telangana. As the storm develops, officials are likely to issue new warnings or update/cancel existing recommendations. Several flights were unable to land at Chennai International Airport and were redirected to Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore due to severe weather conditions. Reports indicate that some areas in Chennai are flooded, with several metro stations and roads closed. Power outages have been reported in certain parts of Chennai. Prolonged heavy rains may trigger floods in low-lying areas and in regions with overloaded drainage systems. If weather conditions become dangerous, local evacuations, flash floods, and landslides are possible. Inclement weather may cause local disruptions in business, transportation, and utility services, rendering some bridges or roads impassable. Flight disruptions at regional airports and temporary closure of ports are also possible. Stagnant water bodies during and after floods contribute to the spread of waterborne and insect-borne diseases. Sewage water and other hazardous materials mixed with floodwaters pose a significant threat to health. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to assist stranded residents and provide relief in the flood-affected areas. Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate those displaced by the cyclone, offering them a safe haven during these challenging times. The local government is coordinating efforts to restore essential services, such as electricity and clean water supply, to normalize life in the city. Community volunteers play a crucial role in distributing aid and supporting affected families, fostering a sense of solidarity amidst adversity. Despite the challenges, Chennai remains resilient, with citizens and authorities united in their determination to overcome the aftermath of the cyclone and rebuild their beloved city.
