France’s left-wing coalition stages a major rally in Paris after President Emmanuel Macron appointed former EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier to the post of prime minister. The New Popular Front (NFP) came first in July's snap elections, although did not win a majority, and Macron refused to approve the group's choice of PM, Lucie Castets, saying she could not win a vote of confidence. One of the NFP's leaders, Jean-Luc Melenchon, condemned the move to appoint Barnier, claiming 'the election has been stolen from the people'.
