A member of the ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), grabbed the proposed reform documents and ran away with them to prevent the bill from being passed. Although the DPP and elected President Lai Ching-te control the presidency, they lost their majority in Parliament to the joint opposition, the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP).
