Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is an American singer and songwriter. Referred to as the “Songbird Supreme“ by the Guinness World Records, she is noted for her five-octave vocal range, vocal power, melismatic style, and signature use of the whistle register. Her first two albums ’Mariah Carey’ and Emotions spawned no less than 5 consecutive # 1 Billboard hits in the USA , a record not been broken by any artist. Following her marriage to Sony Music head Tommy Mottola, Carey became the label’s highest-selling act with the follow-up album Music Box in 1993, her third studio album. It was released by Columbia Records on August 31, 1993, in North America. The album comprises ballads primarily co-written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had previously worked on Emotions. ’Hero’ is one of the hits from that album, which also reached # 1 in the US Billboard charts. It reached # 10 in the Dutch Top 40. This live recording was made during the AVRO Television recording and live broadcast ’Grand Gala du Disc’ on 29 September 1993.
