He completed 14 full-length novels, including 'Oliver Twist', 'Great Expectations', 'Bleak House', 'Little Dorrit' and the semi-autobiographical 'David Copperfield', five novellas (including 'A Christmas Carol') and hundreds of short stories and essays. Much of his work is notable for biting social commentary on the plight of the poor, and sharp satire lampooning the rich and powerful. 'The Signalman' was first published in the 1866 Christmas edition of Dickens' own periodical 'All the Year Round', as part of the famous 'Mugby Junction' collection of railways stories by Dickens and a select number of collaborators, including Amelia B. Edwards and Hesba Stratton. Incidentally, Dickens had survived the Staplehurst rail crash of the previous year, and the experience took a toll on him which affected his health in the last few years of his life. Whether this inspired the story of the Signalman can only be conjectured, but he certainly showed a fascination for railway disasters in several stories - for example in his 1848 novel Dombey and Son.
