‘Resilience’ has become a buzzword in international development but, for many, understanding what it really means remains elusive, especially if there is no easy translation in non-English speaking countries. This animation has been created by Christian Aid as part of a range of materials and tools to introduce staff, partners and communities to the concepts that we believe lie at the heart of this relatively new approach in development. Rather than coming from a starting point of need, it demonstrates how communities can build their resilience to shocks, setbacks and disasters by anticipating risk, working together and adapting to new or changing challenges. The animation can be used to kickstart discussions about the meaning behind the concept of ‘resilience’ in international development, while Christian Aid’s Thriving Resilient Livelihoods approach builds on this thinking and sets out the process by which we and our partners can empower communities to anticipate, organise and adapt so that communities can thrive, not just survive.
