From home to tent: a family’s struggle to survive on Beirut’s coast A young Lebanese man and his mother fled their home in the southern suburbs of Beirut due to Israeli airstrikes, and now live in a flimsy tent by the seaside as the emergency shelters in the city are overcrowded. For the past ten days, they’ve endured harsh conditions with little to no resources. “I worry about my mother, not about myself, because she is a woman,“ the young man says, his voice heavy with the burden of responsibility. They have to sleep on the ground. “We brought these wooden boards to reinforce the tent, but if it rains, we’ll get soaked. Everyone here is in the same situation,” he explains. Their only food is a small amount of mortadella sausage, and there are no mattresses or blankets to provide even a semblance of comfort.
