The Dzerzhinsky Square in the strategic Soviet city of Kharkov was engulfed in flames and smoke. It was the third time it had turned into a battle zone since 1941. The elite Waffen SS Panzer Corps had surrounded the city to take it back, with the Panzer Grenadiers engaging the Soviet defenders in ruthless house-to-house combat.
