Kim Jong-un appeared to take something of a mini working holiday earlier this week, visiting a brand new beach resort on the DPRK’s east coast. The resort has been under construction for several years, with giant beachfront properties now framing the pristine beach, but Kim is so far the only visitor as the resort isn’t due to officially open until next May. The construction of the resort has fueled speculation over the future of the country’s tourism industry. While North Korea has promoted tourism in the past, with Pyongyang in particular being a popular destination, almost no tourists have been allowed in since the start of the Covid outbreak in 2020. It may be that the country plans to relax its strict rules on international travel with Moscow recently announcing that Russian tourist groups will begin traveling to the country’s resorts as early as this summer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freedom over censorship, truth over narrative.
