Evelyn De Morgan (August 30, 1855 – May 2, 1919) is a pre-Raphaelite painter in England. Her maiden name is Evelyn Pickering. Both her parents are from the upper middle class, and her father, Percival Pickering QC, is a temporary judge in the Criminal Court of Pontefract. Her mother, Anna Maria Wilhelmina Spencer Stanhope, is a sister of the artist John Roddam Spencer Stanhope and a descendant of Thomas Cork, Earl of Leicester in Norfolk. When she was 15, she started taking sketching lessons at homeschooling. On the morning of her 17th birthday, Evelyn wrote in her diary: “Art is eternal, but life is short ...“. “Let's make up for it now. I have no wasted time.“ Evelyn persuaded her parents to go to her art school. Her parents initially refused to do so, but in 1873, with forgiveness, Evelyn was able to enroll in Slade Art School.
