Just to be clear, Israel always targets Palestinian medics, this isn’t new. In January 2009, an Israeli sniper fired 14 shots at medics I was with, hitting one medic in the leg, the bullets coming up to the ambulance. Driver got the hell out of the area quickly. Punchline: It was during “ceasefire hours“, with civilians should have been “safe“ to walk (if they needed to flee, to try to go home for clothes, etc). Medics should NEVER be targeted, but are always target practise for Israel. In January 2009, another medic I worked with one night was the next day torn apart by a dart bomb (flechette) fired by an Israeli tank directly at him & the ambulance he stood next to. He died of shock. The Israeli army fired more dart bombs on his mourning tent & neighbours the following day, killing & maiming more civilians with the razor sharp darts. By the end of Israel’s 2009 war on the Palestinians in Gaza, Israel targeted & killed 23 medics or emergency workers and injured 50 more. ***Flechette bombs: Upon a timed explosion in the air, flechette darts are designed to spread out conically, covering a vast area 300 meters wide and 100 meters long, inflicting the maximum number of injuries possible. In the case of a densely-populated region like the Gaza Strip, the number of potentially-injured/killed is incredibly high. The head of the dart is designed to break away. Having penetrated inside a person, this breakage inflicts a second wound per single dart entry, multiplying the amount of internal damage done by the razor-like darts, which number between 5,000 and 8,000 per shell.
