How can SpaceX help... The recent delay in the Artemis program, including the postponement of the Artemis II mission from November to September 2025 and Artemis III to September 2026, has been attributed to several factors. While initial blame was directed at SpaceX's HLS Starship, which had not achieved orbit at the time of the announcement, NASA itself is recognized as a significant contributor to the challenges faced. The intricate dynamics involving both SpaceX and NASA have played a role in the extended timeline for these critical lunar missions. The heat shield remains a crucial aspect that requires further attention more than a year after the conclusion of the Artemis 1 mission. Amit Kshatriya, the deputy associate administrator for the Moon to Mars Program, mentioned that upon studying the heat shield, they observed what he described as an “off-nominal recession of some char that came off the heat shield.“ The Orion crew capsule employs a skip maneuver to address the nearly 5,000-degree Fahrenheit temperature generated as the capsule returns through the Earth's atmosphere at a rapid 25,000 miles per hour. Kshatriya noted that some pieces of the heat shield came off during the initial phase of the skip reentry. “When I talk about it, it makes it sound like there’s some big chunks coming off the vehicle. That’s not correct,” said Kshatriya. “We’re still piecing together that overall timeline. Of course, it’s very tough, based on the assets we had, to identify each and every one, but we did. We went frame-by-frame, through every piece of video that we have from Orion, and from our external assets, to determine when the initiation of that char liberation began. And it was after we started climbing out of that first dive into the skip.” During the Artemis 1 mission, unexpected charring of the heat shield occurred, despite the anticipation of some charring due to the ablative material used. Surprisingly, the heat shield was stripped away, a development not initially foreseen. According to Kshatriya, if the crew had been aboard during this mission, they wouldn't have detected any issues from inside Orion, as there was no excessive heating within the cabin. ---- We use images and content in accordance with the YouTube Fair Use copyright guidelines: Any questions about copyright please send us via Gmail: colonbina25@ To be resolved, thank you.
