Maru has replaced many feathers, in many birds, over the years. This red kite was brought in to the centre by Louis Horton, an RSPCA ACO. The kite needed its severely damaged feathers replaced, if it was going to stand a chance back in the wild. To inpin new feathers, Maru needed to cut the damaged ones as close to the top of the shaft as possible. Then using a small piece of bamboo and special glue, she secured each donor feather in place. This is such a quick procedure, that just 24 hours later, the bird was flight tested and released! Its new feathers will grow through as the old ones moult, so eventually all of the donor feathers will be replaced with the birds own.
