Thapan is the youngest of a few dozen speakers of Judeo-Malayalam, the historic language of India’s Cochin Jewish community. Like most Jewish diaspora languages, it emerged from the convergence of Hebrew and Aramaic with local vernaculars—in this case, the Dravidian language Malayalam.
