Tomas, a German director, and Martin, an English printer, are a married couple living in Paris. One evening, at a party, Tomas goes to bed with a friend, a young teacher named Agathe; this meeting blossoms into a relationship that despairs Martin. After unsuccessfully trying to reconcile with Martin, Tomas moves in with Agathe.
