The vast majority of the truckers who remain in downtown Ottawa say Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to invoke the Emergency Act to quell their protests is a “power grab“ and will not deter them. Prime Minister Trudeau invoked the powers in order to quell the demonstrators who have camped out in downtown Ottawa for three weeks. The truckers and their allies, who have dubbed themselves the “Freedom Convoy”, say they will not leave until the federal government rolls back some COVID restrictions. The Emergencies Act, which was passed in 1988 but has never been invoked, will give police more powers to limit where people can legally gather.
