Spiegel im Spiegel ('mirror in the mirror') is a composition by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (1935 - ). The piece was written in 1978, just before his departure from Estonia. Perhaps this was meant as a melancholic goodbye to his country? A special thank you to TwoSet Violin for introducing me to the piece! I am usually not a fan of modern classical music. This piece however is something special. The piece symbolises an infinity mirror. The simple triads, together with an ascending and descending single note melody reflecting back and forth create such a tranquil calmness of the mind. I must say I am quite struck by its shameless simplicity. In such a chaotic year of 2020, we need this sort of meditative music more than ever. This piece is originally written for violin and piano, but I arranged a solo piano version. I recorded this on my beloved Estonia L210, which I find quite fitting for a modern Estonian composition.
