The song was written in 1982 and can be heard on Toto's album “Toto IV.“ Africa was also released as a single in the same year. Since its release, Africa has topped the US Billboard Hot 100 (the only Toto song to do so) and has been named as one of the top 50 Most Explosive Choruses in NME magazine. The song was written by Toto's keyboardist and vocalist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro. Paich appears in the iconic music video as a researcher in a library, trying to match a scrap of a picture of a shield to the book from which it was torn out. Interestingly, the music video to Africa features Mike Porcaro in place of David Hungate, who had left the band before the video was shot. Toto managed achieve a gold certification for the release of Africa, reaching cumulative sales of over half a million copies in the US alone.
