If you scratch the surface of US “democracy,” do we get authoritarianism? Last week, politicians from Washington’s two-party government shared a rare handshake across the divide to come together to ban TikTok, or, to be more specific, force its owners to sell TikTok to Washington in a move not much different to daylight robbery. TikTok is hugely popular with American Millenials and Generation Z and widely seen among these groups as a way of getting and sharing information outside of the propagandized Western mainstream media. And boy has it made the West’s narrative machine mad! Today, we’ll take a look at what young Americans are saying about the ban, since their own political representatives don’t seem to care, and then I’ll investigate just how legal the move is, before sharing my thoughts on whether I think TikTok will be taken over by Washington or not. This is Reports on China, I’m Andy Boreham in Shanghai. Let’s get reporting! #tiktok #tiktokban #china
