If you recall, Cyril Ramaphosa and other African leaders embarked on a peace mission to Ukraine and Russia in June. Ramaphosa and his security detail travelled on separate flights, but the latter got held back at Warsaw over on-board firearms - which the Polish authorities said lacked the right permits. This prompted allegations of racism and of putting the president’s life in danger (which, indeed, it was: the African delegation came under Russian fire in Kiev!). Lumumba told us the incident smacks of the the West’s inherent superiority complex - of its inability to take Africans seriously on the global stage. The West sees itself as solving Africa’s problems, not as having its own potentially solved by fresh African insights and mediation. In fact, the racist West would find it humiliating if Africans were successful as peacemakers - and that’s why the Poles had to humiliate Ramaphosa: it was a message to him to butt out and stay at home.
