In 1903, under the Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty, the United States occupied the Panama Canal, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and controlled the passage of ships through it for more than 70 years. Since 1979, the zone has been under joint administration of the United States and the Republic of Panama, and in 1999 the canal and isthmus were finally transferred to Panama. The anthem of the Panama Canal Zone was “El Pendón Estrellado“ (“The Star-Spangled Banner“), a Spanish version of the US anthem.
