Brought to you by The United States Air Force Band’s Airmen of Note, this is the Jazz Heritage Series! Today’s installment features all three of the ‘Note’s esteemed guests: vocalist extraordinaire Diane Schuur, the inimitable Sean Jones on trumpet, and saxophone great Ted Nash. Together, they’re featured on this hard-driving, Reggie Watkins arrangement of a classic that has been catalogued as one of the most popular tunes of all time, worldwide. Released almost exactly twenty years ago in late September 2001, “Swingin’ for Schuur” is an iconic recording collaboration between jazz superstars Diane Schuur and Maynard Ferguson, with Big Bop Nouveau. Appearing on that album is this well-known Latin musical sensation, established as one of the most important hymns in the history of Latin music. Its beautiful, haunting melody was officially recognized in 1999 as the single most covered and recorded Spanish song in history, the English lyrics heard here added by Sunny Skylar.
