Good comic operas are rare enough in any period, and particulary scarce in the twentieth century. It's a quite a surprise, therefore, to find one of the best of them, Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery, was composed against the most dismal background one could possibly imagine: Moscow in 1940.
