Leonid Gurevich (born 1936) graduated from the Azerbaijan Conservatory where he was a student of Gara Garayev who had a great influence on the professional development of the composer. He began to form as an artist in the 1960s and, like other composers of the time, the young man actively studied new Western techniques, and his works of those years contained elements of dodecaphony. However, Gurevich’s music even then showed a bright melodic gift, classical clarity of forms, a filigree sense of taste and measure in everything, and a surprisingly harmonious outlook. The main area of the composer’s work is symphonic and chamber instrumental music, as well as scores for theatre productions, chamber vocal and choral pieces, and songs. His works are characterized by original dramatic and timbre solutions, while the composer assigns special importance to direct emotional impact.
