Flash flood in Hallein, State of Salzburg, Austria Natural disaster on July 17, 2021 On Saturday 17 July, the Austrian region of Salzburg was hit by heavy rain. The result was high water levels and landslides. The town of Hallein was particularly affected, where the river overflowed its banks. Water masses flooded most of the old city. People even had to be rescued from the danger zone by helicopter. Mayor Alexander Stangassinger spoke of “disaster“ on Saturday night. The population was asked to stay in their homes, not to enter underground garages and basements, and stay away from river dams. A school in the Burgfried district has created temporary shelters for those whose apartments were not available. More than 200 firefighters fought against the elements that day.
