The solar term of Da Xue (Heavy Snow)

Heavy Snow, a solar term in China, signifies that in most regions, temperatures have dropped to zero degrees Celsius or below. Various areas experience heavy snowfall, even blizzards, due to the clash of cold and warm air masses at the forefront of strong cold air. An ancient saying goes: ’大者，盛也，至此而雪盛也.’ This indicates that during this solar term, heavy snow begins to fall in abundance. Similar to Light Snow, Heavy Snow directly reflects a period of significant precipitation. Therefore, Heavy Snow refers to heavy snowfall. In the ’Zuo Zhuan • Duke Yin’s Ninth Year,’ it is mentioned: ’On flat ground, a foot of snow falls during Heavy Snow.’
