READ: We returned west to chase the 4014 on its return run to Cheyenne after its outing to Omaha for the 2023 College Baseball Championship. Join us as we pace Big Boy west out of Sidney, NE to just east of Kimball, NE. Except for the last few miles into Cheyenne after Archer Hill, it's entirely uphill this final day, which gives us a nice opportunity to hear the locomotive work a bit. The consist behind the tender is about 1,000 tons. A 4000-class was rated for 6,000 tons Sidney to Cheyenne at drag speed, suggesting a ruling grade of %. Partway through, it appears Ed switches off with Kirt Clark to give him some throttle time into Kimball. Enjoy =) Huge thanks to @NYCTARailfan for being my pace driver. FAQ (Read before commenting): The diesel locomotive accompanies UP Steam power to provide a measure of security and flexibility in operations. The diesel can hold or slow the train speed down using dynamic braking, thus saving the cost of new brake shoes and the time needed to install them. Additionally, the diesel can be used to assist when necessary, and to extend the fuel and water supply, allowing for longer operating distances and days. Finally, as of 2021, the diesel is an integral part of the PTC system required for FRA compliance. The water overflow from just in front of the rear cylinder on the fireman's side is the exhaust steam injector overflow port. Discharge from this port is normal when starting and stopping the injector, and when the injector switches between live steam and exhaust steam. Full chase:
