The Steamers were an in-demand group during the doo wop craze of the 1950's. Soon after forming at Occidental College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in 1953, the group gained notoriety after a riot broke out during a sock hop performance at the Rose Schneiderman School of Wayward Girls in nearby Lake Wissota during the winter of 1955. Their tour bus was set on fire and several of the groups members were stripped of their clothing and verbally degraded by a “crazed throng of female teenage reprobates.“ -Wissota Gazette-Journal, 9 February 1955
