Difficulty MATTERS In Video Games! How Easy Mode Shifts Game Design. In my reaction video for the upcoming DaiOuJou port, I ended up sparking a conversation about difficulty in shoot em' ups (and difficulty in video games more widely) by saying a rather harsh statement (I will admit) on the super easy mode included in the port. In this video, I want to explain my views on the role of difficulty in video games and how it is not merely a matter of turning up a challenge dial. Difficulty in video games clarifies the design elements of a game, whereas a lack of difficulty muddles them. What this means is that as a game decreases in difficulty, it actually loses its identity in terms of game design. But I also want to stress in this video that the matter of difficulty in video games is not all or nothing or some general principal; it is matter of scale, precision, and degree that is not easily pinned down by theory.
