(14 Dec 1994) Russian forces Wednesday repeatedly shelled the village of Pervomaiskaya, 15 kilometres northwest of Grozny, Wednesday (14/12), killing at least two people and wounding eight, witnesses said. Women and children took refuge in cellars and makeshift bomb shelters after they found themselves in the line of fierce fighting. Tanks are deployed in the streets and snipers fire from behind ruins. On Grozny itself, Russian planes opened machine-gun fire and bombed its outskirts. And as night fell, Russian helicopters fired on a training airfield outside the capital, setting fire to several planes. Also in Grozny, journalists were permitted to speak to Russian prisoners captured by Chechen forces.
