Galina Ulanova: Born: 8 January 1910, Saint Petersburg, Russia. - Died: 21 March 1998, Moscow, Russia. From the moment Miss. Ulanova made her debut in 1928 at the Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov Ballet) in a Pas De Deux from Les Sylphides and also The Nutcracker, and later the same year in The Sleeping Beauty as Princess Florina, she captured the attention of the media and the ballet world. The Russian press at the time described her “Much of (Marina) Semyonova's style, grace, the same exceptional plasticity and a sort of captivating modesty in her gestures.“ Miss. Ulanova first performed Giselle in 1932; it was by chance she gained the lead role. As the originally ballerina who was to perform the role fell ill. Miss. Ulanova remained with Kirov Ballet until 1944 performing in various other ballets.
