(9 Mar 2018) Dozens of Tibetan protesters clashed with police outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi on Friday as they tried to enter the high-security complex ahead of the Tibetan National Uprising Day observed on March 10. The 1959 independence uprising was quelled by the Chinese army forcing the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama and his followers into exile in India. China claims Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries. Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent until China occupied it in 1950. The protesters from the Tibetan Youth Congress shouting anti-China slogans were detained, forcibly pushed into vehicles and taken away by police. Monitoring groups reported Thursday that a man set himself on fire and died in western China's Sichuan province in the first self-immolation protest among Tibetans this year. Earlier this month, the Indian Express newspaper reported that India had told top officials to avoid events held by Tibet's exile government
