Hiking the Boundary Trail aka Observatory Trail, second week of May 2024. What a hike, it started out in the hummocks and then relentlessly gained elevation. It is amazing how the hummocks are full of water, life, and vegetation only 44 years after the eruption created a blank slate here. For the day we hiked 10 miles and had 2200 feet of elevation gain, a few areas where sketchy with narrow tread and steep drop offs. The day was awesome, so glad I film hikes like these, they for sure make me happy and the memories fill me with joy :) Based on the people we passed while going up I estimate only 10-12 people made it to the visitor center this day, it was awesome being the only 2 people at the top, briefly 1 other person was present with us, we had the amphitheater all to ourselves. The Road to Johnston Ridge Observatory is closed until at least 2026 due to a landslide in May 2023 that took out the Spirit Lake overflow creek bridge.
