For his penultimate full-length film, Jean-Pierre Melville is back to his favourite genre, the detective thriller, that he mastered with films such as THE FINGER MAN (Original title : LE DOULOS) or THE GODSON (Original title : LE SAMOURAÏ). Brilliant exercise of style where the filmmaker pushes the sound to the extreme taste for the purity, THE RED CIRCLE is similar to a funeral ballet: Melville orchestrates with precision the movements of his lonely heroes, thugs and cops reunited by destiny, to which the actors Alain Delon, Yves Montand, André Bourvil and Gian Maria Volonté are lending admirably their features. Today restored in 4K for its 50th anniversary, THE RED CIRCLE remains Melville's greatest success to which many directors have paid tribute, from Jim Jarmusch to John Woo or Michael Mann. The 4K version was selected by Venice International Film Festival and was premiered at Bologna's Il Cinema Ritrovato in August 2020. #StudiocanalCatalogue
