Currently, Russians siding with Ukraine under the banner of Freedom of Russia Legion have been launching attacks on the Russian military in towns bordering Ukraine. This came as a complete surprise to many around the world. However, the Russian-Ukrainian, ex-State Duma member [2006-2017] and leader of the legion had mentioned a revolution back in December of 2022 in Toretsk, Donetsk Region, Ukraine. When asked about all the men who had left Russia since the first and second major mobilizations in Russia, Ponomarev said he would prefer for those who oppose Putin’s regime to stay in Russia and prepare themselves for a major escalation. Today, hundreds of thousands if not millions of Russians have fled or moved to different countries around the world causing changes in living affordability, housing, business and demographics. Some in these host countries argue that the influx of Russians has caused more harm than good but others are more welcoming usually stating that they have been beneficial for local businesses. Many of these Russians are employed by companies who allow them to work remotely which gives the workers a chance to flood places like Bali, Indonesia or Cyprus. It’s also common to see the more affluent Russian citizens abroad while their lesser privileged counterparts get torn apart on the frontlines. Ilya’s and the legion’s mission is clear; to bring down Putin and his government. With the backing of the Ukrainian military and in effect, NATO, whether or not their mission will succeed is an ongoing event that will forever be remembered in military history.
