Last night I was playing a jazz mandolin gig in downtown Monterey, CA with Juneau Rowe on jazz piano while an incessantly loud car alarm in the street was making it difficult to concentrate on the jazz music, so we took a break and quickly realized that the car alarm itself was honking in an asymmetrical 9/8 rhythm! So, of course I got the mandolin out to jam along…riffed out on the traditional 9/8 Romanian tune “Din Dobregea” from my first Balkan String Projekt album (available everywhere online).
