This is the 2nd movement of Bryan Johanson's “The Bootlegger's Tale“, commissioned by and dedicated to William Kanengiser, as part of the “Diaspora Project“. Bryan's maternal grandfather emigrated to the US from Ireland, and settled in the Appalacian region. His livelihood was based on a craft he brought from his homeland: spirit distillation. When Prohibition started, he became a bootlegger. Bryan made a musical portrait of stories his grandfather told him, making moonshine in a still, and running from the law. The movements are: “Lament for a Broken Still“; “Ode to Whiskey“; “Cat and Mouse Interlude“; and “Head for the Hills“. Strongly inspired by Irish and Appalacian fiddle tunes, it's a fun piece to play. It was recently published by D'Oz.
