The catchiest tune in the movie Encanto tells us that we don’t talk about Bruno while talking about him the entire song. Clearly they don’t talk about Bruno but singing is just fine. Encanto has turned out to not only be a charming story of a magical family where the only villain was the crushing weight of the expectations of previous generations on the rest of the family but also a treasure trove of small details, references, and intricate detail. Composer Lin Manual Miranda has infused the music with cultural references as well as nods to his own inspiration to become a musical composer in the first place. The movie also is intricately laced with foreshadowing and symbolism that isn’t necessarily obvious the first time through. So if the catchy songs bring you back for a second time you have a bunch of new things to discover now that you know the story. How telegraphed Dolores’ feelings are, or how Dolores is aware that Bruno is living in the walls but everyone is too wrapped up in their own things to notice. There’s so much detail and nuance in the movie it bears another go at digging out even more details. What is your favorite hidden detail in Encanto?
