The digital imaging PACS is a combination of hardware and software hybrid system that is used to acquire, store, deploy and retrieve medical images using Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard. The images and reports are transmitted digitally via PACS by integrating the system with the radiology information system (RIS) and hospital information system (HIS) One goal of PACS is to improve the imaging department workflow as compared to film-based technologies. PACS automates and, to varying degrees, improves the workflow among imaging modalities, image acquisition, image processing, image distribution and storage, and the associated personnel within the health care institution. Because 70% of the typical radiology department’s workload is plain film images, as radiology departments convert to digital modalities, PACS implementation on a larger scale becomes more practical.
