In December 2016, the U.S. Navy has set a goal for future force structure that includes achieving and maintaining a fleet of 355 manned ships of specific types and numbers. The 355-ship goal was thereafter made part of U.S. policy through National Defense Authorization Act. The 355-ship force-level goal is a figure for manned ships only. Smaller unmanned surface and subsurface vehicles have been used by the US Navy for many years, but they have not been considered ships in their own right in existing force-level goals. As per the goal, U.S. Navy desire to operate 12 Ballistic missile submarines or SSBNs, 66 Attack submarines or SSNs, 12 Aircraft carriers, 104 Large surface combatants including cruisers&destroyers, 52 Small surface combatants including frigates, Littoral Combat Ships& mine warfare ships, 38 Amphibious ships, 32 Combat Logistics Force ships and 39 support ships.
