Scan back through Peter Stevens’ impressive résumé and your eyes will no doubt be drawn first to the McLaren F1. But did you know the acclaimed automotive designer styled another British supercar constructed entirely from carbon-fibre which pre-dates Woking’s legendary three-seater? Built by JaguarSport, a subsidiary of Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw’s illustrious motorsport outfit, the XJR-15 was a pedigree-filled Group C prototype racer for the road. And unlike its angular and aesthetically fussy Italian contemporaries, this Big Cat was soft, minimal and, to these eyes, absolutely gorgeous. In the last two years, more light has been cast on these lesser-understood 1990s supercars and they’re finally getting the recognition from collectors they deserve.
