After WWI, when prices had nearly doubled due to inflation, there was a big threat of sudden deflation. Companies were threatening to lower wages, but without lowering prices. More and more evidence of profiteering was showing up and laws were being put into place to crack down. But it wasn't a smooth process. By 1920, people were fed up with how much clothing cost and decided to start what was meant to be a long term boycott of overpriced garments.
