The story is narrated by an unnamed friend of the amateur detective C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin and the narrator live in Paris and often amuse themselves by analyzing mysteries and strange events. One day, they read about a particularly brutal murder that took place in the Rue Morgue, a street in Paris. An elderly woman and her daughter have been killed in their apartment, with signs of a violent struggle. The police are baffled, as the only clues are some odd physical evidence and witness accounts that describe hearing a strange, high-pitched voice speaking an unknown language during the crime. Dupin becomes intrigued by the case and, along with his friend, begins to investigate. After carefully examining the crime scene and witness statements, Dupin deduces that the murderer was not human, but rather an escaped orangutan.
