“Wednesday, 13 September The 17th stage of the Vuelta is brutal, even though it is only 125 kilometres long. After two introductory climbs, the finish is on the iconic Angliru, which climbs an average of 9.8% over 12.4 kilometres. Steepest section? 23,5%. Actually, it would be better to speak of three different Angliru. The first 5 kilometres climb at 8%, and after a relatively flat kilometre the blunt axe appears. In the second half, in fact, the Asturian mountain rises by 15 % (on average!). The steepest section, at 23.5% - appropriately named Cueña les Cabres (Goat Path) - comes 2 kilometres before the finish. The Altu de L'Angliru has been part of the Vuelta eight times. That brought victories for Hugh Carthy (2020), Alberto Contador (2017, 2008), Kenny Elissonde (2013), Wout Poels (2011, after Juan José Cobo's suspension), Roberto Heras (2002), Gilberto Simoni (2000) and José María Jiménez (1999). The approach is also anything but flat. After a little more than half of the course, the riders tackle the Colladiela - a 7.8 kilometre climb with a 7.1% gradient - and after the descent to Turón and a flat section, the Cordal awaits. It is 5.4 kilometres long and has an average gradient of 9.2% on this stretch. It is an excellent last test before the final climb, as it has a double-digit ascent halfway up. From Alto de Cordal, the route descends to La Vega, the village at the foot of the monster mountain. And then the hot finale begins...“ ( & Routes 'n' Maps 'n' Flags) Creating cycling stage animations requires a lot of work and computing power. You are welcome to support me with a donation:
