The West Bank’s Tulkarm region was rocked by two Israeli airstrikes Saturday, resulting in the death of at least nine Palestinians – among them, four Islamic Jihad fighters and a Hamas commander. The Israeli armed forces said the first airstrike hit a vehicle in an attempt to thwart a militant cell allegedly on its way to carry out an attack. Hours later, a second strike targeted another group of armed militants who had fired on troops during a supposed counter-terrorism operation in Tulkarm, according to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The strikes come days after the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, and as a regional conflict – ignited by Israel’s ongoing conflict with the militant group – escalates across the Middle East. Hundreds marched through the West Bank Saturday calling for an end to Israel’s violence against prisoners and Palestinians in Gaza.
