Wildfires in Hawaii are among the deadliest natural disasters in the United States in recent years. Thousands of people have fled their homes on Maui, the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Most of the popular tourist city of Lahaina burned to the ground. Many historical buildings have been destroyed. The firestorm claimed the lives of at least 36 people and forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people. Locals and tourists are trapped as firefighters are hampered by winds associated with Hurricane Dora. Those who could be stuck on the island are being searched from helicopters. Some had to flee from the flames in the ocean. According to preliminary estimates of the local leadership, the recovery will take years.
